I know I am old - but I'm not THAT old!

Do I look old to you?

So earlier this week, Brynn & I were in Wal-Mart buying Valentines. As Brynn was looking at the boxes and trying to choose, an elderly man came over to her and handed her something, and told her to show it to her grandma. Now Brynn and I were the only people in the aisle other than this man, so he obviously was referring to me!
I know, I am no longer the spring chicken I once was. As I approach my 36th birthday, I know I am not such a young thing any more. But still, I am getting sick of these kinds of comments!
This was not the first time. One week last summer I had both of the following incidents happen - in the same week!
1. I went to get my hair cut, and the stylist went on and on and on about how lucky I was to not have a single gray hair on my head. Did I know how unusual it is to not have gray hair at my age? (Sheesh - I'd just turned 35!)
2. Went to a family party with Darrin's huge extended family - the family is huge, so huge there are often people there I don't know. (Remember, 45+ cousins, aunts, uncles etc.) One woman (who I know her name, but not how she's related) saw me holding my neice, Dave & Jenny's youngest. She was tiny at the time. I noticed her a few times looking at me oddly, then she finally came over to me and said "I kept thinking how scandalous it was that you had a baby at your age, but I just realized that this baby is probably your granddaughter, not your daughter. I was so relieved!"
I was speechless for a moment. Marti saved me by saying, actually, this is her neice." and distracting the woman into another conversation.

Busy week!

Well, this week started out just crazy. Monday morning I set out to catch up on the mounds of laundry that had accumulated before and after our trip, only to have the washing machine die on the FIRST load. Got that fixed on Tuesday while I was watching Grant during Tim's interview. It was interesting to see the difference between those two. Brynn ran & hid, Grant kept watching to watch the repainman.

Tuesday night I had an interview with a potential client for June. I'm hoping they hire me - I really enjoyed chatting with them.

Wednesday, Valentine's Day. I went & helped Callie's class make candy houses for their class party. Just like gingerbread houses, only made of cardboard and decorated with Valentine's Day candy instead of Christmas candy. Their teacher had taught the class several Valentine's Day songs, you know, the traditional "Knock Three Times on the Ceiling if you Want Me", " L is For the Way You Look at Me", "Going to the Chapel and We're Gonna Get Married" and "Cupid, Draw Back Your Bow". It was pretty funny to see and hear the kids dancing around, singing those songs and bopping while they decorated the houses.

We didn't have plans because I had to teach that night. The girls really wanted to do a fancy dinner, so I cooked and they set the table with the nice dishes, tablecloth, candles, etc. But (as I knew it would be) dinner was the usual rush it is on the nights I teach - we have all of about 13 minutes together between the time Darrin gets home and I have to leave.

So I hurry out from dinner, go all the way to the hospital, get everything set up, and wait. No one shows. Half an hour after class was supposed to start, I pack everything up and go home. Made me angry because the week before I had asked the couples in the class if they had plans for Valentine's Day, and offered to reschedule, and they ALL said they would come. So that was Valentine's Day.

Yesterday was a mother-daughter activity with Callie. Those are always fun and I enjoyed having some time with just her. In the afternoon, she went out to play with her best friend Andrian, who moved to Saratoga Springs (about 40 minutes away), and a few other friends of hers who live in our neighborhood - I picked them up & brought them home.

The rest of the week (literally every moment) was filled with lots of details of running my house and prepping for this conference that is now only 6 days away. I was reading a book on our trip to St. George, a good book about a midwife living on the Bay of Fundy (Canadian East Coast) in the early 1900s - and I haven't had a chance to crack it open since we got back. Now for me to go that long without reading is really unusual!

Complete Exhaustion!

So Wednesday night when my client had still not had her baby, I called to go over the backup arrangements with her before I went out of town. Only she told me she was in early labor!

I was teaching a class that evening, so I threw all my birth stuff in the car (she was having her baby at the same hospital where I teach) and told her I would call before I left the hospital.

After my class was over, I called her, and not much was happening, so I went home anyway. Took a shower, changed into more comfortable clothes, had something to eat, and waited for the call. When it hadn't come by midnight, I decided to just lay down & see if I could get some sleep.

But the phone rang just 15 minutes later and I was back up and on the way.

Labored at home with her for a couple hours, went to the hospital and things kept moving along, although slowly. By 9, it was pretty clear this baby wasn't coming any time soon, and Darrin & I were leaving at noon.

So I called my backup to come in, and she arrived just before 11, just in time for things to get kind of scary & crazy for a few minutes. I couldn't bring myself to leave until it was resolved. So instead of arriving home by 11:15, I got back just before noon.

Quick shower, lunch, e-mail check, take Brynn to babysitter, and we were on the road by 1. Darrin was so good about doing the driving while I tried (mostly unsuccessfully) to sleep. My backup called me at one point to let me know my client had her baby around 3. A cesarean, because the scary complications came back and could not be resolved otherwise.

We stopped in Nephi to track down a cemetary and get some headstone pictures and got to St. George around 6, checked into our hotel, and went for some dinner. (A very good Chinese Place called "Gimme Sum") After dinner we drove around a bit to find the convention center and stretched our legs at the Zion outlet mall. Went back to the hotel, called the kids and I slept from about 8:30 to 7 the next morning. Felt wonderful in the morning. We even walked a few miles on a walking path along the Virgin River.

The next day the Genealogy Jamboree began and we went over to the Dixie Center to get set up. Our booth was a good size, and after some minor snafus (You wanted electricty and internet in your booth? Um, yeah, that's what the $168 check we mailed you was for!) we were up an ready for business just in the nick of time before the exhibit hall opened.

The first break was wild - hundreds of people coming around, we couldn't keep up. Sold 2 copies. The break was an hour long, and it was a crush of people the whole time! When it was over and everyone went to the next session, we sat down and went "Whew! This conference is going to be GOOD!"

But the rest of the breaks were slower and slower each time. I think we talked to ONE person on Saturday after 2 pm. And he didn't buy. Total sales were just 6. But we will see in the long run what the effect is - as we have tons and tons of people saying things like "My son is a web designer - we wants to do a web site for me, but he doesn't have time. I'll have to see if he likes this option" - sometimes that kind of thing generates sales days or weeks down the road.

But the trip was really fun - we really enjoyed being together with just the two of us. We ate out again the next time at a Mexican food place up on the bluff with a good view of the city, went for another long walk (that time I took my camera and got some pictures.) and had some good time to just unwind & talk. Someday we'll have to pull off a trip that is all fun and no business!

Saturday the conference went until 5:30 - we were packed up and leaving about 6 - stopped for some food and hit the road, driving all evening through rain & wind (but thankfully NOT SNOW!) and arrived home at about 11 last night. Dennis had brought the kids home and put them to bed at our house, so I got to go in and give them all a kiss as they were sleeping. Callie smiled, Kyra mumbled "leave me alone" and Brynn was clueless, but I was happy to be back with my kids!

It was hard to get up and get going for 9 am church today. All I wanted to do was snuggle in bed with my kids and sleep more. But we managed to get there (on time even!) and I struggled, but did NOT fall asleep in Sacrament meeting.

This afternoon I took a nap. Woke up and looked at the clock, saw that it was 6:04 and thought "Good, I can sleep another hour." but my bladder made me get up anyway. When I got up, I wondered why I was in my clothes, and finally smelled dinner cooking and realized it wasn't morning after all!

In other news, we are almost done with our family goal to read the Book of Mormon individually by Valentine's Day. Kyra & I are done (Kyra finished a few weeks ago, I finished on Tuesday) Callie's on Moroni 3, and Darrin's in Ether Hoefstuk 9. (That's Chapter 9 in Afrikaans - he decided to read it in Afrikaans this time, so he's slower than everybody else). brynn has been reading the "Book of Mormon Stories" books with whoever is around to help her, and she's in 3rd Nephi, but we're cutting her slack since she can't read at that level on her own. (Curious George books she can do - but not the scripture books)

The girls had a fun time playing at Dennis & Marti's while we were gone - they went out to dinner one night and took them to see Charlotte's Web on Saturday. We let them take Friday off from school so they had a ton of time to play.

I think that's everything going on around here! This week looks much more low-key, and I am glad!

Happy Feet

Busy week - lots and lots of craziness and work for the UDA conference leading up to a big board meeting this morning. We got all the participant packets assembled and did a dry run on one of the activities for the conference. I am looking forward to it.

Tonight we used the free passes Larry H Miller gave us when we bought the new van to take the whole family to see Happy Feet. No one thought it was all that great, there were good parts, sure, but on the whole the thing was TOO LONG! And why they insist on having scary parts in little kid movies is beyond me.

While we were there, the kids saw a movie poter for this movie:

Which Brynn now really wants to see. It comes out in April so maybe for her birthday we'll take her. There BETTER be a fire hydrant or two in it!

Next week is the big St. George Genealogy Jamboree, we will be exhibiting there and hope for lots of good sales. We have lots to do to get ready, I am sure it will be another crazy week.

This just in!

Family Tree Magazine is holding a contest for the best personal family web site. THREE of the 5 finalists are using Darrin's software to create their sites!

(The first three listed are the ones who use the software.)

Just had to brag a bit - I am so proud of Darrin!
